[00:00:28] As part of this event, minority community health advocates and leading patient advocacy nonprofits come together to discuss current initiatives aimed at addressing health and access to care issues that disproportionately affect minority populations.
[00:00:46] Last year, organizations such as the National Pancreas Foundation and Color of Crohn’s and Chronic Illness shared programs designed to support minority communities. And this year we have another fantastic lineup of participants, including Dr. David Murray, Director of the Office of Disease Prevention at the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Donna Grant-Mills, Associate Dean at Howard University, Burgess Everett, Executive Director of the National Minority Health Association, and many others.
[00:01:26] It’s not always immediately obvious, but the challenges faced by minorities in accessing care compared to other demographic populations impact quality of care for everyone. To break down barriers to this complex and multifaceted problem, we must address social and economic factors including poverty, lack of educational resources, and language barriers. Discrimination and bias in the healthcare system also contribute to health disparities, as minority patients too often receive lower quality care, experience longer wait times, or receive a delayed diagnosis.
[00:02:15] Many are now aware how the COVID-19 pandemic brought to light the systemic health inequities that exist in the United States, as minority communities experienced disproportionate impact of the virus due to a lack of access to healthcare and underlying health conditions.
[00:02:36] That’s why events like the upcoming Addressing Health Disparities livestream are so important. They provide a platform for experts to discuss these issues and raise awareness about the actions we can take to address them. This year’s program agenda and associated social media promotions will encourage action through education and awareness.
[00:03:02] So, mark your calendars for the livestream event during National Minority Health Month And let’s all work together to ensure that everyone has access to high quality healthcare.
